Dear friends,

Why did you join Toastmasters?

Many of us would say that we wanted to overcome the fear of public speaking, become better communicators, develop our leadership skills, compete in speech contests, meet people from around the world, or find a second family.

​

All of these are wonderful reasons. However, over the years, I have come to believe that there may be an even more fundamental answer.

​

We joined Toastmasters because there was a Toastmasters club waiting for us.

It sounds obvious until we stop to think about it.

​

The club was already there.

The meeting agenda had already been prepared.

The officers were already serving.

Contests were being organized.

Conferences were taking place.

Someone had built all of this before we arrived. Because they did, our lives changed.

​

In 1924, Toastmasters began with a single club in Anaheim, California, led by Dr. Ralph C. Smedley. It started with one club, a handful of people, and one idea.

More than one hundred years later, millions of lives have been transformed, including yours and mine.

​

That happened because generation after generation of volunteers refused to take Toastmasters for granted. They created clubs, mentored members, trained leaders, and served so that one day, people like you and me would have a place to belong.

​

As District Director, I have the privilege of leading an extraordinary team of volunteers who have accepted that same responsibility: to leave Toastmasters stronger than we found it.

​

That means creating opportunities for new clubs to be born, helping existing clubs achieve excellence, and ensuring that more people across Algeria, Andorra, Gibraltar, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, and Tunisia can experience what we have experienced.

​

I firmly believe that somewhere, someone is waiting for a Toastmasters club that does not yet exist. Perhaps it is the next World Champion. Perhaps the next International President. Or perhaps simply someone who needs a safe place to find their voice.

​

In either case, they deserve that opportunity. It is our responsibility to bring it to them.

​

Let us build that opportunity together.
